Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service. From street parties and ‘Big Jubilee Lunches’ happening across the UK, to London’s Trooping the Colour, Service of Thanksgiving, concert and pageant, the nation and commonwealth will come together over four days to mark The Queen’s 70-year reign. Below we go into more detail on what to expect over the bank holiday weekend to celebrate Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
The festivities officially begin on Thursday 2nd June with the Trooping the Colour celebration, usually held on the second Saturday of June, this year the event takes place early to accommodate a full schedule of celebrations planned throughout the country. Screens broadcasting the events will be placed in The Mall and St. James’s Park in London and all mainstream events will be televised throughout the weekend.
On Friday 3rd June an historic Service of Thanksgiving will be held at St. Paul’s Cathedral whereby Great Paul, the largest church bell in the country, will be rung for the Service. Since being restored in 2021, Great Paul has only been rung eight times however this will be the first time it will ring for a royal occasion of Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
In addition, to mark this extraordinary and exciting occasion, St Paul’s has announced a brand-new exhibition. Jubilee: St Paul’s, the Monarch and the Changing World explores the history of Jubilee celebrations at St Paul’s Cathedral across three centuries. The special exhibition at St Paul’s Cathedral examines the Jubilee celebrations for King George III, King George V, Queen Victoria and the Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
The BBC and Buckingham Palace have unveiled a glittering group of performers from the worlds of music and dance set to perform at the Platinum Party At The Palace concert which takes place on Saturday 4 June at Buckingham Palace. The evening will pivot around global themes that have been born, or evolved, during the breadth of Her Majesty’s reign due to extraordinary British and Commonwealth contributions including Fashion, Sport, The Environment, 70 Years of Pop Music and Musicals.
On Sunday 5th June, The Platinum Jubilee Pageant takes place and will have all the excitement and spectacle of an international parade and carnival – awe-inspiring and filled with marvel and delight. The Pageant will combine street arts, theatre, music, circus, carnival and costume to celebrate Her Majesty’s unwavering duty, love of the natural world and dedication to the Commonwealth.
